Fishing Maryland's Chesapeake Bay to Virginia Beach
At Lucky Strike Fishing Charters we primarily fish in and around Chesapeake Bay, Cape Charles, Solomons Island, Virginia Beach etc. The fine coastal waters of the Virginia Beach are filled with all kinds of fish species. Abundant varieties of Rockfish can be found here in these deep blue waters. In addition, there are also plenty of other fish species such as flounder, Croakers, Bluefish, Mackerel, Perch, Spot, Spadefish and many others! We only use custom rods and Penn Reels as well as the finest tackle.
At Lucky Strike Fishing Charters we have the necessary experience and know-how to find you the best fish catches ever! Our captain Steve Barko has been a veteran serving as a fishing charter captain ever since 1988.
His experience
Having had over a decade of experience as a mate for several premier captains native to Chesapeake Bay, Steve has the necessary experience and technical knowledge needed to help you get the best fish catches. His unrelenting passion for his work, right from the preparation to the guest anglers to figuring out where the biggest fish catches were likely to be, is the secret to his being a great captain. He has started from humble beginnings and it is only his experience, which has made him the captain of Lucky Strike Fishing Charters. Having served innumerable hours as required by a United States Coast Guard, captain Steve Barko now knows the waters in and around the Chesapeake Bay like the back of his hand! He knows exactly which waters will have the most abundant species of fish available. This is something not many captains can boast of but Captain Steve Barko can!
Licenses
Captain Steve Barko has his regular 6 pack license along with the near shore 50 ton masters. This special license is not owned by many captains and allows Steve to operate the Maryland charter boat ‘Taurus’ over 6 anglers. This extensive set of licenses does not come easy. It is a laborious effort and requires intense struggle and experience in order to pass the numerous examinations needed to get this license.
His knowledge
Captain Steve Barko has been able to successfully leverage the immense wealth of knowledge he has while fishing the Chesapeake Bay, Solomons Island, Cape Charles and Virginia Beach etc. He operates from Point Lookout and Solomons Island right up to Windmill Point, Cape Charles and surrounding areas.
Fish species found
Steve is able to catch a multitude of fish species ranging from the famous Rockfish (striped bass) to several other species like Croakers, flounder, Bluefish, Mackerel, Perch, Spot, Spadefish and many other species that are found in our waters. While some fish species are available through the entire year, some are seasonal fish and Steve will advise you when is the best time to fish.
Steve is a captain in a true sense of the word. He is passionate about his job and this passion is infectious. You will quickly get engrossed in the fishing charter challenges and the adventures of catching exotic species like the Rockfish.
We depart from three or four locations throughout the year. This is done to follow fish either entering or leaving the Chesapeake and also target other types of fish in the summer months. We dock in Solomons and Point Lookout Maryland and Cape Charles and Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Solomons is the location where we depart from most of the fishing season, beginning in April and ending in November. Solomons is a great destination to fish out of because it is only about 90 miles from the Ocean. Many species of fish migrate here throughout the spring, summer and fall. Trophy Rockfish, Bluefish, Trout, Croakers, Spot, Flounder, Mackerel and Perch are the fish you can expect to catch from Solomons.
Point Lookout is the other Maryland location that Taurus departs from. We move to that locations in late November and tie up there for about three weeks each year to stay closed to migrating Rockfish. This allows me to be closer to fish leaving the Bay and keeps the boat ride time down. Point Lookout is the Southern most tip of Maryland and is located at the mouth of the Potomac River as it meets the Chesapeake. This is a place that produces great Rockfish action each fall.
In mid June to July, Lucky Strike fishing Charters fishes the lower Bay and the coastal waters for a variety of exciting action. The fishing opportunities available here are much different than Solomons Maryland. Here we fish for species that only migrate up to the Virginia coast and lower Bay. We fish for species like Cobia, Spadefish, Trigger fish, Flounder and Sharks. Imagine targeting Cobia where 40- 80 lb. Fish and 15-60 minute fights are common. How about fishing for Spade fish in the morning and finishing up with Flounder fishing in the afternoon. The fishing here at that time of the year is awesome where we have caught numerous Virginia citation fish. Wonderful hotel accommodations and great restaurants are the reasons why may anglers charter multiple days here. Call today to book some of the best fishing available.
Lucky Strike Fishing Charters moves the “Taurus” back to Virginia Beach in mid December and stays there until early February. Each year we follow the migrating Rockfish out of the Chesapeake and relocate to Virginia where they winter over. The entire East Coast population of Striped bass and Bluefish winter over between December and February off the coast of Virginia and North Carolina. For that reason the fishing is absolutely awesome. You can’t imagine catching 20-50 lb. Trolling or on light tackle until you have done it. The weather is mild by winter standards with average daily temperatures in the upper 40’s and low 50’s. It may be cool but the fishing is hot, hot, hot! The accommodations are as good as the fishing offering Ocean front rooms under $40/night, yes under $40/night for a fisherman’s rate. Call early to book your trip here because available days go quickly as you can imagine

Lucky Strike Fishing Charters offers full day, half day and night fishing trips.
Full Day Charters.
A full day charter offers the angler time to target more than one species of fish. For Example, we might start the morning by targeting Rockfish or Stripers and when we have reached our limit, we would look for Bluefish, Flounder or whatever you may be interested in. A full day charters allows time to run longer distances to get to better action or a better grade of fish. A typical full day starts with getting to the boat a little before 6:00 a.m., loading up the anglers, coolers and gear and pulling out of the slip at 6:00 a.m. The boat returns to the dock around 2:00 p.m. A full day would typically be about 8 + hours. All you will need for your trip is proper clothing, sunscreen, cooler for you food and to pack of the fish that you caught. We will take care of the tackle, licensing, most baits and ice for the day and your cooler.
Half Day Charters
The half day charter departs twice a day, once in the morning and the second at approximately 12:30-1:00 p.m. A half day charter is just the right charter when the fish are close to the dock and the ride is short. This is typically in the early spring through late summer. If you want to get out on the water and you have younger anglers, a half day charter is just the right amount of time to keep their attention. Imagine catching a 20-40lb Trophy Rockfish in the Spring on a Half Day Charter, that's what you can expect with loads of fish 15-20 minutes from the dock, there is plenty of time for fishing. Bring your cooler, snacks, drinks, proper clothing & sunglasses and we will provide the rest. We take care of the fishing gear, bait, tackle, ice and licensing.
Night Charters
Night Charters is one of my favorite times to fish. Beginning in early June thru mid August, Lucky Strike Fishing Charters offers night charters. We target Rockfish, Bluefish, Spot fish and Croakers. Leave the dock around 4:00-4:30 p.m. and go chumming for Rock and Blues for 2-3 hours then settle up for Croakers. Croakers, a member of the Drum family, pull hard, hard, hard! It is not uncommon to catch 100-150 Croakers a night. Pick the biggest or take your limit of 25 per person. These fish are fun to catch and great to eat. At night, these fish come to life…..big time. You will catch and catch and catch. You will return to the dock around 11:00-12:00 midnight. We supply all bait, tackle, licensing and ice.
