In 1975, I learned the art of lure making from two old timers from Ellwood City, PA. Ed Latiano, now 93 years old and the late Martin Bender were asked by my father-in-law, Bill McConahy, to teach me everything I needed to know to make lures. They were very helpful in getting me started on a very enjoyable hobby. Bill McConahy was a true “Muskie fisherman”! He started going to Canada for muskies in 1937. In that era, the main roads to the muskie producing lakes were gravel and not easily passable. He had fished numerous lakes in the Eastern U.S and Canada before settling at “Green Acres Resort” on Pigeon Lake in the Kawartha Lakes of Ontario. Bill was an active fisherman until his passing in 1982. He inspired me to start making plugs and continues to be an inspiration to provide fishermen with the lures he enjoyed so much.
As time went on, I picked up some tricks of the trade and became pretty good at the craft. Around 1977, the mother of a young fellow by the name of Dale Wiley approached me about getting him started in lure making. He was in tenth grade at the time. I was more than happy to help him out and share the knowledge that was given to me. He now owns and operates Wiley Lures of Ellwood City, Pa, and has been kind enough to return the favor by helping me get started again.
In 1980, I purchased the old homestead and had to completely remodel it. I got away from making plugs until September of 2003. I was offered an early retirement from 37 years in the forging industry and decided to get back into the lure business. I have established an in-home shop where the cedar wood plugs are sawed, turned, formed and painted -- becoming the lures that my father-in-law was so adept at using. I offer these lures to you to be used as your father or grandfather may have used them in the past. They are productive, eye-catching lures with a great action. Whether trolling or casting, these lures are capable of producing a stringer full of muskie, bass, or walleye.
Thank you and good luck,
